| Kingdom Animalia Untitled Document
Hi there.
I'm Becca.

This is my happy place.

This blog is not quite a personal blog, nor is it entirely an animal blog. I try not to get lost in the details though.
Here you will find the odd personal post, the odd quote, the odd random facts and the odd interesting landscape. Mostly though, you will find animal pictures here. Lots and lots of incredible and amazing animals in all their glory.

All photos belong to their respective owners.

Enjoy.
Patagonian Mara.
The Mara is a large rodent in the family caviidae. These large relatives of guinea pigs are common in the Patagonian steppes of Argentina but live in other areas of South America as well such as Paraguay. Maras are the fourth largest rodent in the world, after capybaras, beavers, and porcupines, reaching about 45cm in height.
There are two species of maras recognised, the Patagonian Mara (Dolichotis patagonum) shown above, and the Chacoan Mara (Dolichotis salinicola).
Maras have stocky bodies, three sharp-clawed digits on the hind feet, and four digits of the forefeet. Maras have been described as resembling long-legged rabbits.
Maras may amble, hop in a rabbit-like fashion, gallop, or bounce on all fours. They have been known to leap up to 1.8m and the Patagonian Mara can run at speeds up to 29km per hour.
More Maras can be found here. (photo by M Kuhn; info via wikipedia)
